Rio Tinto strengthens its board following the appointment of two new independent directors with core mining industry expertise. This addresses long-held investor concerns over the skill sets of the board amidst difficult economic conditions in the resources sector, which has contributed to the large impairments and asset write-downs by the Company in recent past. With the recent appointment of debut CEO Sam Walsh in January 2013, who has brought in a host of cost cutting and other business transformation initiatives, we believe the change in the board and senior leadership team signals the Company’s preparedness for a new strategic direction. Further, this is the first AGM where the Company will put three separate remuneration resolutions for shareholder vote in compliance with UK and Australian legislation. This includes the recently introduced tri-annual binding vote on remuneration policy for UK law purposes.
